Students demonstrate against mafia
15000 students against the Mafia in memory of judges Falcone and Borsellino: in the next generation, Italy sees a genuine hope for the fight against organised crime.
“Today’s youth gives us hope that our Italy can be changed”. These are the words of anti-mafia judge Grasso.
More than 15000 students took part in demonstrations, which were organised by the foundation “Giovanni e Francesca Falcone” on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of Capaci and Via d’Amelio massacres. On the 23rd of May, students from all over Italy stepped off the “Nave della Legalita” (the ship of legality) and marched together with the Sicilians to the bunker of Palermo’s prison. Here, discussions and presentations were held on themes such as the struggle against the Mafia and the importance of teaching good citizenship in the school system. Other marches and demonstrations took place in Corleone, where Mafia boss Provenzano was arrested in 2006.
The “Festival of Legality drew to a close in the evening in Palermo with a free concert entitled “One thousand notes against the Mafia”.
