Police seize assets from top Mafia aide’s son
Palermo — Italian anti-Mafia police have seized real estate and other assets worth over three million euros owned by Giovanni Spera, son of Benedetto Spera, aide of jailed Mafia “boss of bosses”, Bernardo Provenzano.
Giovanni Spera is under investigation by anti-Mafia magistrates. His properties, companies and bank accounts are located in the Sicilian capital, Palermo, but also around Aquila in the central Italian region of Abruzzo.
He is under surveillance and his movements are restricted.
Provenzano was captured in a hideout in a derelict farm building in his hometown of Corleone, Sicily in April 2006. He had been a fugitive for more than 40 years.
Benedetto Spera was arrested on 30 January, 2001 at a farmhouse in Mezzojuso, 40 kilometres from Palermo, after 30 years on the run.
He was convicted in absentia in 1992 for the car bomb killings of prominent anti-Mafia judges, Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone. He received a life sentence for both murders.
