MONTREAL – Police allege 10 people arrested Thursday night are part of a drug trafficking network with ties to the Montreal Mafia.

Two of those arrested, a man and a woman, were held in custody and are expected to appear in court Friday afternoon on charges of possession of drugs with the intent to traffic. Eight others were released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

The arrests and search warrants were carried out at six coffee shops as part of Operation Nanti, an investigation by the Montreal police morality, alcohol and drug squad.

“People who were targeted in the operation were the street-level dealers,” said Const. Anie Lemieux, of the Montreal police. She said those arrested are suspected of dealing marijuana and cocaine out of coffee shops in Montreal.

Eight men, between the ages of 24 and 49, were arrested along with two women, ages 35 and 40.
“The investigation is still ongoing and other arrests are expected,” she said,

Lemieux said the investigation started in June after police received information from the public.
