PALERMO, 490 MLN IN GOODS SEIZED IN 2006
The Financial Police of Palermo have carried out, during 2006, 430 seizures of goods belonging to members of the mafia, for an overall value of approx. 490 million euros, including 49 companies.
Confiscation, instead, amounted to approx. 31 million euros. In the meantime asset checks have been set in motion, coordinated by the head anti-mafia department unit of Palermo, for 41 other mafia members, ones who fronted for them and others with mafia connections, and 32 related companies, which will conclude in the first quarter of 2007.
The asset investigations by financial police concerned the top mafia members of Palermo, Partinico, San Giuseppe Jato, Termini Imerese and Madonie. The identification of the goods was also made possible thanks to numerous collaborators of justice.
The results will be spoken of this morning at 11 am in the headquarters of the provincial command of the Palermo financial police, in the Mazzarella barracks on via Francesco Crispi, 226. The sequestrations included: 248 pieces of real estate, 132 cars, 49 enterprises, bank accounts and insurance policies.
The confiscations during 2006 included: 90 pieces of real estate, 5 cars, 9 companies and bank deposits. Among the activities still underway, in addition to those with mafia connections, the verifications of the financial police regard 16 individuals under investigation for usury and 33 for criminal association for drug trafficking.
Activities are coordinated by colonel Francesco Carofiglio, provincial commander of the Palermo financial police.
