Nine arrested in mob crackdown
NEW YORK — A reputed acting mob boss is being held without bail in New York City after being arrested with eight other suspected gangsters for alleged Mafia crimes.
Thomas “Tommy Shots” Gioeli (gee-OH’-lee) has pleaded not-guilty to robbery, murder, and extortion charges. A U.S. attorney says the arrests come after a three-month investigation aimed at the highest levels of the Colombo family and La Cosa Nostra.
Gioeli is charged in 3 of 4 slayings mentioned in the indictment. 2 of them were in 1992 during a bloody civil war for control of the family. He’s also charged with a fur shop robbery a year earlier.
This is the second high-profile mob case recently. In February, 62 reputed members and associates of the Gambino crime family were hit with numerous charges.
