FORMER New York mayor and US presidential hopeful Rudolph Giuliani’s life may have been saved by a single mafia boss who vetoed his assassination.

According to the testimony of an FBI agent, the five heads of the New York mob discussed a possible “hit” on the then-federal prosecutor at a 1986 meeting, the New York Post reported.

Agent William Bolinder told a court that Mafioso-turned-informant Gregory Scarpa Sr told ex-FBI supervisor Lindley DeVecchio that three mob bosses voted against the plot.

Mr DeVecchio is on trial for allegedly orchestrating four gangland killings by leaking inside information to Scarpa, who is now dead.

According to The Post, the documents handed to the court reveal who was in support of “whacking” Mr Giuliani.

“On September 17, 1987, sources advised that recent information disclosed that approximately a year ago all five NY LCN (La Cosa Nostra) families discussed the idea of killing USA (United States Attorney) Rudy Giuliani and John Gotti and Carmine Persico were in favor of the hit,” the Scarpa memo reportedly said.

“The bosses of the Lucchese, Bonanno and Genovese families rejected the idea, despite strong efforts to convince them otherwise by (John) Gotti and (Carmine) Persico.”

Mr Giuliani’s pursuit of the heads of the crime families and successful conviction of other leading mob figures paved the way for him to become mayor of New York.

His leadership during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks brought him international prominence and he is considered a frontrunner for the Republican nomination for next year’s US presidential election.
