A court in Messina, presided over by judge Bruno Finoocchiaro, sentenced 18 defendants including mafia boss Luigi Galli and other members of the mafia gang in Giostra to a total 218 years in prison. 16 other people were acquitted of all charges. Public minister Giuseppe Verzera had demanded a total 400 years in prison for all of the 34 defendants.

That was a major blow for the mafia gang led by Galli who, from jail, managed to send out orders and instructions to his aids through his wife Angela Marra and his deputy Giuseppe Gatto. The criminal activities carried out by the family ranged from drug trafficking to extortions and illegal horse racing. Investigations found out that a number of women were directly involved in these activities and that the family had close ties with the gang of Delfino in Calabria.

Here are the convicted and their sentences: Antonino Arrigo (16 years), Giovanni Arrigo (18), Giuseppa Biondo (8), Giovanna Bonanno (6 years and 8 months), Giuseppe Bonanno (14 years), Orazio Bonanno (14), Rosario Bottari (18), Michele Cento (8), Rita Chiarello (8), Luciano Cordi’ (8), Bruno Delfino (20), Luigi Galli (10 to be added to a previous sentence that he is already serving in connection with the “Giostra” trial, Giuseppe ‘Puccio’ Gatto (10, see Galli), Angela Marra (Galli’s wife, 12 years), Antonella Minardi (9 years and 4 months), Pietro Minardi (14), Natale Paratore (10), Eduardo Perrone (14).
