Jail governess who married mafia inmate held
A prison governess who had an affair with a mafia inmate was among 23 people arrested yesterday in a drive against organised crime.
Marianna Adanti, 39, fell in love with Giuseppe Laudadio while he was on remand in her prison. When he was released, the couple married and had a child - all with the blessing of officials at the prison department.
However, investigators have since alleged that she gave special privileges to Laudadio’s godfather, Michele Froncillo, while she ran Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, outside Naples.
It is alleged that other mafia inmates were given medicines by guards which helped them to obtain early release certificates. Police said the drugs were mainly laxatives so the prisoners would lose weight and appear ill. Investigators alleged this all happened with Miss Adanti’s full knowledge.
The arrests were ordered by Paola Laviano, the investigating magistrate of Naples, after a tip-off from the wife of a godfather. Miss Adanti has split from Laudadio and is currently governess at Poggioreale jail in Naples.
