Italy: Police seize 900 million euros of Mafia assets

Rome — Italian tax police seized assets worth some 900 million euros from organised crime between January and June this year - a fivefold increase against the same period in 2007.

Italy’s previous centre-left government made the fight against organised crime one of its priorities.

Italy’s conservative prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, who took office last month, has pledged to continue this battle.

The Italian Mafia’s annual turnover - 90 billion euros or 7 percent of Italy’s national income - makes it the country’s leading business, according to a report by Italy’s main retailers’ association, Confesercenti released last October.
