Italian police arrest supermarket owner suspected of Mafia links
ROME: Sicilian authorities arrested a supermarket chain owner Thursday who had been mentioned in notes found following the arrest last year of Mafia boss Bernardo Provenzano, police said.
Giuseppe Grigoli is being investigated for allowing the Mafia to use his supermarket chain in western Sicily to launder funds, investigator Antonino De Santis said.
Grigoli was allegedly cooperating with Matteo Messina Denaro, a fugitive Mafia boss from the city of Trapani, in western Sicily. Denaro, who has been on Italy’s wanted list since 1993 for murder and other crimes, is believed to be vying to succeed Provenzano.
Provenzano, the Sicilian “boss of bosses,” was captured last year after decades on the run.
