The film’s success was an added blessing for all, especially Scorsese, who also directed the mafia classic, “Goodfellas.”

“It’s a real surprise,” Scorsese said. “It doesn’t mean that I don’t like the movie, it’s just that we weren’t thinking of that when we made it.”

“Marty’s movies classically don’t make money,” Damon said. “They really don’t make a lot of money, relative to some of these other directors, but we’re doing it to work with Martin Scorsese — that’s why we’re all here — and to have, not only to be the movie Marty wanted to make. But then to have people really like it and go to see it and be that successful, nobody was expecting it.”

In fact “The Departed” is Scorsese’s most successful film to date, taking in $275 million at the worldwide box-office. Everyone involved hopes his luck holds until Oscar night, and Scorsese walks away with his first Oscar.

“The studio brought it out in October and Marty said to me at one point, he said, ‘It’s great I don’t have any of this Oscar pressure, so I can really make the movie I want to make,’ ” Damon said. “I truly, truly hope he gets recognized for this one because I feel like … I feel his body of work will be better if he is, in an odd way. It matters to him, as crazy as that sounds, it’s not a secret, he said, he’s on the record saying he really wants it, which is surprising because you are one of the greatest directors that ever lived, why would you need validation from anybody?”
