Council to create solar energy on former Mafia land
Palermo — A local council in the western Sicilian city of Trapani is to build 1,320 solar panels on a plot of land confiscated from local Mafia boss, Nunzio Spezia.
The solar panels are expected to generate an annual 510,000 kWh of electricity, which the Campobello di Mazara Council will sell to the national energy grid.
The revenue will be paid into a special fund to help small and family enterprises as well as arts and crafts projects created by victims of the Mafia or from workplace accidents.
The solar panels will cost 1.850 million euros, but the Campobello di Mazara Council says the project is a priority.
“It is a novelty that we are eager to include as part of measures to uphold the law and make fuller use of expropriated (Mafia) assets,” said local councillor for public works, Maurizio Agola.
Italy is a country with under-developed potential for solar energy. Despite having one of the sunniest climates in Europe, it currently produces less than 5 percent of its energy from solar and other renewable sources.Council to create solar energy on former Mafia land
