A British woman has been arrested over alleged links to the mafia.

Ann Hathaway, 44, from Green Street, Middleton, Manchester, was arrested by officers from Scotland Yard’s extradition unit at her home this afternoon.

“She was arrested under a European arrest warrant issued by the Italian authorities under the offence of participation in a criminal organisation,” a Metropolitan police spokesperson said.

Ms Hathaway is the wife of Antonio Rinzivillo, a convicted murderer and drug trafficker who is reported to be a senior member of the mafia in Italy.

The couple lived together in Scilly, Italy, and Ms Hathaway is said to have stayed in Rome for 16 years until 2005 when she returned to Manchester.

The Associated Press news agency cites a police source as saying she is suspected of running her husband’s criminal activities after he was jailed for 30 years for the murder of Antonio Mirabelle, an Italian lawyer.

Ms Hathaway has been taken into custody at a Manchester police station and is due to appear before the City of Westminster magistrates court tomorrow, the Met added.
