Anti-Mafia priest receives grisly SMS threat

Published by at 2:11 am under Italy

Salerno — An Italian priest who has campaigned against the Mafia, Don Luigi Merola, said on Tuesday he had received a text message warning that he would be killed and his dismembered corpse dumped outside his old parish in the southern city of Naples.

“Good Evening, you know who I am. I am a soldier from the Mazzarella clan. I am working for you. Remember that you must die and your dismembered body will be left outside the church in Forcella,” read the anonymous message.

Merola read out the message to an audience gathered at the Festival of Legality conference in Teggiano, in the province of Salerno, near Naples.

The priest’s disclosure shocked the audience, whose members included Salerno’s police chief, Vincenzo Roca.

Merola was transferred to Rome earlier this year after resigning from his parish in the district of Forcella in Naples, declaring himself “embittered and disenchanted” in the fight against the local Mafia or Camorra.
