MONTREAL – Nicolo Rizzuto sat through his sentencing hearing yesterday with the patient look of a man who knew he would be sleeping in his own bed for the first time in nearly two years.

Salman Rushdie has said that an Italian journalist who is under an alleged death threat from the country’s feared Neapolitan mafia is in even greater danger than he was under Iran’s fatwah.

Italian police catch mafia boss in bunker

Rome – Italian police arrested Thursday the boss of a mafia family which, with another criminal clan, is involved in a long-standing, bloody feud, including the so-called 2007 “Duisburg Massacre” in Germany, officials said.

The 46-year-old Antonio Pelle was captured in what police described as a specially-built underground bunker hideout on a farm near the southern town of Locri in the Calabria region. Continue Reading »

‘Casino’ Gambling Legend Dies

Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, the legendary Las Vegas gaming tycoon whose life inspired the Martin Scorsese film Casino, has died aged 79.

Officials in Florida said he died from a heart attack in his Miami Beach home.

Rosenthal, who had close links to the Chicago mafia and who once survived a car bombing, ran the Stardust, Fremont, Hacienda and Marina casinos in Las Vegas through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. Continue Reading »
