Palermo — An Italian judge was on Wednesday due to rule in a landmark Mafia trial whether the municipality of Palermo and business associations, as well as Italy’s Interior Ministry may collectively act as plaintiff or claimant alongside 15 alleged victims of the Sicilian Mafia’s extortion racket. Mafia bosses Sandro and Salvatore Lo Piccolo are among 76 suspects standing trial for Mafia association. Mafia boss Antonio Iovine
American Nato officers have been renting a villa near Naples for years that belongs, indirectly, to Antonio Iovine, a clan chieftain of the Camorra, the Neapolitan Mafia.
Mr Iovine, 44, nicknamed “o’ninno” — the baby — because of his small stature, is wanted for murder and other crimes, and is listed among the 30 most dangerous criminals in Italy. He has been on the run for 12 years. Continue Reading »

Rome — Italy’s anti-Mafia investigators have moved to close a top restaurant in the historic centre of Rome because of its alleged links to the Calabrian Mafia or ‘Ndrangheta. The Italian daily, Corriere della Sera, reported on Tuesday that the magistrates believe the ‘Ndrangheta is running ‘Alla Rampa’ and another 20 other lucrative businesses in Rome, including hotels, restaurants and shopping centres. But the article also makes the far more alarming claim that the Calabrian Mafia has made a pact with the Neapolitan Mafia or Camorra to divide the city and its business between them.
