Journalists need protection from Mafia, says rights group

Rome — An Italian media rights watchdog, Information Safety and Freedom, has launched an appeal for greater protection for journalists reporting on the Mafia in Italy.

“We launch an appeal to international associations for the freedom of the press because we want to keep watch over the safety of our colleagues in Italy who operate in the areas controlled by the Mafia,” said Stefano Marcelli, the president of ISF on Wednesday. Continue Reading »

Italy arrests mafia boss linked to German killings

ROME — Italian police said today they had arrested the head of a clan of the ‘Ndrangheta, or Calabrian mafia, which is suspected of being behind the execution-style killing of six Italians in Germany last year.

Giuseppe Nirta, one of Italy’s most-wanted mafia fugitives, is suspected of being the “boss” of the Nirta-Strangio clan which is at the centre of a long-running feud that police believe led to last August’s killings in Duisburg. Continue Reading »
